ANAHEIM - The Southern Pacific Girls' Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League (IBVL) Playoff, a program of the Southern Pacific Volleyball Committee which is affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), draw was released announcing the fifth year of the high school program in Southern California. In the IBVL, there are eight divisions and one conference which determine playoff berths into the championship. Defending three time IBVL champion and Bay Division Champion, Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach) earned the #1 seed in the playoff with Mater Dei (Santa Ana), Trinity Division champions earning the #2 seed overall. Also undefeated and earning the third seed and fourth seeds respectively are Westlake from the Marmonte Division and Sierra Canyon from the Mountain Division.
Just like it's NCAA counterpart, beach volleyball is scored with a dual match format with the exception of three pairs instead of five. Each school fields three pairs (teams) in order of strength to match up against opponents to determine the overall match winner. Each match is played in the traditional best of three scoring format. Many schools field junior varsity teams which are also divided into divisions allowing for three more pairs (teams) to compete in the program.
Also part of the playoffs are the IBVL Girls' Pairs Championship on Sat., May 14 at Dockweiler State Beach in Los Angeles which determines the best pair (Individual team) in the league. Each school enters one pair into the tournament with higher finishing schools earning additional berths in the one day event.
The playoffs open on Thu., May 5 at Harbor Beach Cove in Ventura Harbor continuing through the finals on Sat., May 21 at Ocean Park in Santa Monica. The IBVL includes schools from Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
The draw is posted at www.ibvl.org which also includes final standings for each division and conference and past results from both girls and boys leagues.
