Eight of the 10 honorees announced last month by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) in their 2017 Club Awards are proud members of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The Club Awards program honors and recognizes ten deserving coaches and club directors in the youth/club volleyball community. AAU members include John Sample (TAV, Director of the Year); Mike Lingenfelter (Munciana, 18s Coach of the Year); Michelle Erins (Illini Elite, 17s Coach of the Year); Melissa Starck-Bean (KIVA, 16s Coach the Year); LJ Sariego (TAV, 15s Coach of the Year); Felix Viera (OVA/TBVA, 13s Coach of the Year); Bryon Larson (Adidas Dynasty, 12s Coach of the Year); and Dylan Mulkey (Carolina Union, Boys Club Coach of the Year).
The AVCA Club Awards Committee selected a Club Coach of the Year in each of the seven girls age divisions (12-18), a Beach Club Coach of the Year, a Boys Club Coach of the Year and a Club Director of the Year. The honorees will be recognized at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon at the AVCA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
Nominations had to be submitted for consideration, and the coach nominated must have an active AVCA membership. The selections were made by the AVCA Club Awards Committee: Brennan Dean (Wave), Jill Stucky (NORCO), Bill Peer (Colorado Juniors); Bob Westbrook (A5); Ron Kordes (KIVA); Stephen Boyle (Pumas); Sherry Fadool (Triangle); Maggie Griffin (VCNebraska); John Sample (Texas Advantage); Dave Weitl (Washington Volleyball Academy).
